Tanning Tips

Sunbed tanning is a relaxing and sought-after treatment that you need to prepare properly for to get the full benefits. Ways to prepare for a tanning bed session include checking your suitability for the treatment, preparing your skin, drinking plenty of fluids, choosing the right machine, and applying tanning lotion prior to the visit, amongst other considerations.

In this article, we’ll explore these points in more detail to guide you through what to do before tanning bed appointments, including top tips on how to prepare for using a tanning bed.

How to prepare for a tanning bed session

Double check your suitability

While tanning is a beneficial beauty treatment, it’s not suitable for everyone. If your skin type is very fair, very freckled, or prone to burning, it might be unsafe for you to use a tanning bed. Likewise, if you or your immediate family have a history of skin cancer then you may also need to reconsider. Still unsure whether your skin is suitable for the treatment? Simply book an appointment with your GP to get some clarity. It’s also important to check in with your doctor if you’re undergoing any medical treatments or taking any medications.

Find the best time

A question that is sometimes asked is whether you should tan before or after a workout. We always recommend using a tanning bed after a workout, as it’s a great way to relax your body after exercising your muscles. There are even some suggestions that tanning post-workout helps your skin absorb more UV as your pores may be more dilated after exercise. That’s why it’s beneficial to choose a tanning bed treatment that is part of a gym facility so you can easily move from your workout to the tanning machine. Though, here at Formula One Gym, our sunbeds are also available for non-members who would rather not join the gym.

Prepare your skin

It’s recommended to shower prior to a tanning session to ensure clean skin that is free of makeup, perfumes and deodorant, all of which can negatively affect the quality of your tan. During the shower, make sure to exfoliate in order to remove dead skin cells so that the clean skin underneath is ready for the UV. This promotes a more even tan. Finally, it’s wise to apply a non-oil moisturiser to your skin after bathing to ensure that your skin is not too dry during the tanning session.

Drink plenty of water

Prepare for a sunbed by making sure to drink plenty of water before and after your tanning session, as the treatment can lead to some dehydration and lightheadedness if you neglect to consume enough liquids either side.

Pack suitable clothing

You will need to remove all jewellery prior to treatment as leaving jewellery on can result in an uneven and lined tan. In terms of clothing, most customers opt for a bikini to get maximum coverage. Some people prefer to enter a tanning machine naked, so if that’s an option that you favour, check in with your tanning bed provider to ensure that this is allowed.

Select the right machine

Tanning machines are available in two main types, with a choice between standing up or lying down. Standing up machines usually emit stronger UV rays to give a deeper tan, and you will need to stand for the duration of the session that is usually around 10 to 15 minutes in length. Lying down machines emit UV rays that are not as strong as the other type, and so the sessions are slightly longer at around 15 to 20 minutes. People usually opt for a lying down machine if they want a more relaxing experience. If you are unsure of how long to tan, then please ask our receptionist at Formula One Gym who can give advice based on your skin tone.

Apply tanning lotion just before

To reap the full benefits of your tanning session, it’s advisable to apply tanning lotion just before you enter the machine. If you don’t have your own, ask your tanning bed provider if they have any available for purchase. Here at Formula One Gym, we provide sachets and bottles of tanning lotion to suit all skin types and will even provide friendly advice on the most suitable lotion for you.

Wear eye protection

Always wear eye protection before entering the tanning machine to maintain healthy vision. Simply closing your eyes, or even wearing shades, cannot give you the adequate level of protection that you need. Here at Formula One Gym, we give out ‘winkees’ eye protection free of charge for your convenience.

Use a tan extender afterwards

If you want to make the most of your tan, it could be worth purchasing a tan extender to apply after a treatment session. There are many available on the market, so make sure to do your research to select a product that’s right for you.

Visit again

Usually it requires several tanning sessions to see positive results. The exact number of tanning sessions will depend on the darkness of tan that you’re seeking, along with your skin type and how powerful the tanning machine is. For advice on how many sessions you might need as an individual, ask your tanning treatment service provider to advise. Always leave at least 24 - 48 hours between tanning sessions, and never tan more than 2 - 3 times per week to ensure your safety.
